Mobile data traffic set to soar

Ericsson exec expects there will be 30 times more data than voice on the network by 2015, and predicts volume-based billing will be needed

Data traffic volumes have surpassed voice in the mobile space, a trend that is expected to continue well into the future, an Ericsson official said during an industry panel session in Silicon Valley Tuesday evening.

3.8 Billion Smartphone Applications Downloaded This Year

According to research2guidance’s “Global Smartphone Application Report 2010,” the global smartphone applications market revenue crossed $2.2 billion dollars within the first six months of 2010.

This is in stark comparison to 2009’s $1.7 billion revenue. The latest report also stated that a total of 3.8 billion mobile applications were downloaded within the first six months compared to the 3.1 billion download in 2009.

Intel to acquire Infineon's wireless division for $1.4 billion

Intel will acquire Infineon Technologies' wireless division for $1.4 billion, the company said Monday.

The acquisition of Infineon's wireless division could help Intel grow faster in the high-volume smartphone market, where the company has minimal presence. Most smartphones today carry chips designed by rival Arm, and Intel has had its eye on the smartphone market as the volume of chips for mobile devices outpaces traditional CPUs that go into PCs.

Nearly Half of Mobile Traffic Will be Offloaded in 2015

One proven way to maximize the availability of mobile network bandwidth is to offload as much traffic as possible onto WiFi or other fixed networks. And if ABI Research is correct, nearly half of all mobile traffic will be diverted to the fixed network by 2015.

Today, about 16 percent of mobile data is diverted from mobile networks today, and that is expected to increase to 48 percent by 2015, ABI Research predicts.

As Smartphone Growth Skyrockets, Which Brand Will Dominate?

Recent numbers from both Nielsen and metrics firm Canalys suggest that Google's Android platform will take the top spot. Nielsen says Android grabbed 27 percent among new mobile subscribers in the U.S. over the past six months, just beating out Apple's 23 percent share. Even more impressive is a report from Canalys that says Android grew by 886 percent between April and June compared to the same period last year.
